I also attended St. Joseph's (1st grade to 6th grade).
Sister Mary Janet was principal . The custodian was Mr. Nally.
We used to line up in the morning in front of the convent to carry the nuns book bags. I was so proud one morning when I was selected to carry Sister Edward Gerard's book bag in 2nd grade. The only problem was her book bag was 3 times bigger than me !!!!! I dragged that sack of books all the way into the school. She must have liked me ...that was the year I received an 'honorable mention' for being "class standing' I STILL HAVE IT... I found it in a pile of photos my mom had !!!!!!!!!!!!!
We used to have uniform inspections . All students lined up in front of the classroom and 2 students would be selected to receive the monthly "neatness pins". Every wednesday was half day of school so the public school kids could have religious instruction day. When we had bad snow storms, we would listen to the radio early in the moring... all public schools were closed. BUT- St. Joseph's was open !!!
My final year was 6th grade. The nuns were replaced with the meanest teachers they could find. Mr. Denniston was principal. I was so glad to transfer to the brand new Kings Park Jr. high in 7th grade !!!!!!
